Joseph Miranda on "From the
Gracchi to Augustus: The Fall of the Roman Republic, Rise of
Empire."
From 133 to 27 BC, the Roman Republic endured a series of civil
wars, both cold and hot. Endless wars abroad and insurrections at
home, political conspiracies among the elite, street fights between
political factions, a middle class in decline, assassinations of
popular politicians, Cleopatra, Cicero and the rise of Caesar. Until
the Republic collapsed and was replaced by Empire.
What can be learned from this contentious period of history? Can
libertarians use these lessons to stake out a claim in 21st
century America?
